Sun Ra was a highly prolific experimental jazz musician, composer, poet, philosopher and bandleader best known for his "cosmic" philosophies on life and music, and for leading his musical ensemble, the Arkestra. His music ranged from keyboard solos to big bands of over 30 musicians and touched on virtually the entire history of jazz, from ragtime to swing music, from bebop to free jazz.
